Cycling in the Fränkische Schweiz (Franconian Switzerland), Germany

Cycling is very popular in the Fränkische Schweiz (Franconian Switzerland) with many dedicated cycling routes. It is also easy to cycle from Bamberg or Bayreuth on day trips. Although the altitude differences in the region are hardly 200 m/660 ft, it is easy to find enough climbs for a proper workout.

For mountain bikers, the longest routes are near Heiligenstadt. Here 130 km/80 miles of marked routes are divided into three circular routes rated medium to difficult. Ebermannstadt has two mountain biking routes of 10 and 26 km/6 and 16 miles. The difficulty depends on the direction. Leaving the trails can result in fines of up to €5,000.

Bicycles can be rented in virtually every town in the region. Try:

  • Forchheim: Touristinformation, Rathaus, tel 09191-714-338.
  • Ebermannstadt: Fa. Hölzlein, Forchheimer Straße, tel 09194-255
  • Streitberg: Fa. Distler, Schauertal 2, tel 09196-256
  • Muggendorf: Aktiv Reisen, tel 09196-998566
  • Gößweinstein: Schumann's Fahrrad-Shop, Balth.-Neumannstraße 43, tel 09242-7736
  • Tüchersfeld: Fam. Held, tel 09242-315

Steam Trains in the Fränkische Schweiz (Franconian Switzerland)

On Sundays, from May to October, steam train enthusiasts can take a museum train operated by Dampfbahn Fränkische Schweiz, Postfach 1101, 91316 Ebermannstadt, tel 09194-794-541, from Ebermannstadt to Behringsmühle; from here it is a 30-minute walk back to Gößweinstein. Trains depart on the 45-minute journey along the Wiesent from Ebermannstadt at 10 am, 2, and 4 pm; from Behringsmühle at 11 am, 3, and 5 pm. Some journeys are by historical diesel rather than steam engines. Tickets are €6 one-way and €10 return. The soft seats of the first-class wagon are 50% dearer.
