Cycling in the Fränkische Schweiz (Franconian Switzerland), Germany
Cycling is very popular in the Fränkische Schweiz (Franconian
Switzerland) with many dedicated cycling routes. It is also easy to cycle
from Bamberg or Bayreuth on day trips. Although the altitude differences in
the region are hardly 200 m/660 ft, it is easy to find enough climbs for a
proper workout.
For mountain bikers, the longest routes are near Heiligenstadt.
Here 130 km/80 miles of marked routes are divided into three circular routes
rated medium to difficult. Ebermannstadt has two mountain biking routes of
10 and 26 km/6 and 16 miles. The difficulty depends on the direction.
Leaving the trails can result in fines of up to €5,000.
Bicycles can be rented in virtually every town in the region. Try:
